Things to love about a road trip

1. Things won’t go as planned, and that’s okay

It doesn’t seem to matter how well we plan out our route, meals, finances, and activities. Road closures, delays, lines, and unexpected detours are par for the course when it comes to a road trip. No matter how far off of our original plan we end up, however, we’re still going to make it to our destination eventually.

2. Closer connections to others

No matter how well we know, our traveling companions, being squeezed into a car with them for an extended period, will definitely test our patience at times. Road trips offer a chance for connecting with people on a deeper level.

3. Tastes differ, and we’ll be better accustomed to taking into consideration another point of view

Whether it’s music, snacks, or roadside attractions, it is almost guaranteed that every member of our car will not be able to agree on the majority of decisions. There’s no situation like an extended road trip to remind us of the difficulty and beauty of a variety of opinions.

4. It’s essential to enjoy the silences as meaningful

Even though the conversations we’ll have on our road trip will be hilarious, enlightening, and thought-provoking, in turn, there will also be moments full of peaceful silence that can cast a spell over everyone in the car as we soak in the serene moments found amid a hectic adventure.

5. Go off the beaten path

Sure, the highways will get us to our destination faster, but we certainly won’t have as much fun along the way. If our schedule allows for it, be sure to take some of our exploring off the main roads and into the local drives (that often follow a very similar route) and open up the possibility of new experiences.

6. Photo opportunities abound

The ability to pull over whenever the whim strikes us.

7. Packing light teaches us the importance of objects and which ones are minor and best left behind

Do we really need an outfit for every imaginable occasion, or can we take into consideration the space requirements of others as well? For this reason alone, I turned to adaptable, downsized outfits and ebooks.

8. The best experiences will catch us off-guard

Memorable moments hide around every corner.

9. Maps are essential, especially off the beaten path

A little old-fashioned adaptability is good for everyone.

10. It really is all about the journey

When we look back on a road trip, it’s guaranteed that our strongest memories will be of the journey, not our destination — and that is why road trips remain one of the best ways to see the world, especially for those with flight anxieties.
