Bailey, our oldest Manx (no tail), was recently diagnosed with asthma. I never would’ve guessed that animals could get asthma but apparently, it’s possible. We saw the x-ray of her lungs.
We’d initially taken her in for something stuck in her throat because that’s what her choking sound like. She does it at least five times a day. It’s rather difficult to watch a cat go through this. We were hesitant at the diagnosis but the vet said that if Bailey received the steroid shot and it worked to clear up the choking for a month then it is definitely asthma which it did clear up temporarily. The problem arose that you can’t give a cat steroids more than twice or they can get diabetes and need insulin which is very expensive, not to mention it takes a toll on the cat.
Another one of the vet’s suggestions was purchasing an air purifier for each floor of the townhouse. We did. And it’s worked somewhat on relieving her asthma. She naps in her cozy pet bed next to it which seems to help her the most. It’s amazing how much like children a pet can become. Not to the same extent of course; but they truly are my fur babies (2 Manx and 2 American Bobtails).
